Welcome New Faculty!

Please join me in welcoming our new faculty members – Dr. David Espinoza, Dr. Carola van Eck, and Dr. Alan Yan!

 

David R. Espinoza, MD
Division of Sports Medicine

 

Dr. David Espinoza will join the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Sports Medicine effective September 1, 2017.

Dr. Espinoza received his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical School in May 2013.  He completed a family practice residency at Christus Santa Rosa in June 2016 and recently  completed the primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in June 2017.

Dr. Espinoza will see patients in the Monroeville and North Huntingdon offices as well as at the UPMC Rooney Sports Center.

Carola van Eck, MD, PhD
Division of Sports Medicine

Dr. Carola van Eck will join the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Sports Medicine effective September 1, 2017.

Dr. van Eck received her MD degree from the University of Amsterdam in 2008 and in 2009, began a two-year collaborative postdoctoral research fellowship with our Department and the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam focusing on the anterior cruciate ligament. In February 2011, she obtained her doctorate in Medicine with a thesis on ACL reconstruction.  She completed residency training in orthopaedic surgery in our department in June 2016.  She completed fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, CA, in June 2017.

Dr. van Eck is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine and specifically anatomic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.  She will see patients at the both the UPMC Rooney Sports Center and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.  She will also serve as Team Physician for Robert Morris University and the Pittsburgh Passion Women's Football.

Alan Y. Yan, MD
Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery

Dr. Alan Y. Yan will join the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery effective September 1, 2017.

Dr. Yan received his medical degree at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and completed internship and orthopaedic surgery residency training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He pursued fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at Duke University Medical Center followed by a combined adult reconstruction and orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Minnesota.  Prior to joining our department, Dr. Yan was on the faculty at Creighton University.

Dr. Yan is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in lower extremity reconstruction and foot/ankle surgery.  He is specialized in total ankle replacement surgery for post-traumatic arthritis, degenerative joint diseases, deformative correction, and traumatic injuries of the foot and ankle.  In addition he has experience in the arena of total hip and knee reconstruction and orthopaedic traumatology.  He will see patients at the Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center, Mercy Hospital, the Kaufmann Medical Building, and the Lemieux Sports Center. 

Dr. Yan is actively involved in international education with AOFAS Chair of Task Force of International Education. He also serves as Visiting Associate Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
