Dr. Russell earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Russell has been part of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Mississippi Medical Center since 2000. In February 2013 and 2022, Dr. Russell was selected to serve as the Chairman for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.  Dr. Russell was honored as the inaugural recipient of the James L. Hughes MD Endowed Chair in 2014. In July 2021, he assumed the role of CEO of University Physicians.

Dr. Russell is one of the nation’s leading orthopaedic trauma surgeons, recognized as an expert on obesity in orthopaedics.  His creation of the clamshell osteotomy has been widely used to correct malunions (crooked bones).  He has authored and co-authored many publications, presented both nationally and internationally on his specialty of orthopaedic trauma.
